Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a landlocked country located between sub-continental and central Asia. The country shares its borders with six other nations – China to the east, Pakistan to the south, Iran to the west and the former Soviet states of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The terrain is arid to semi-arid comprising mostly rugged mountains with very cold winters and burning hot summers.

  • Officially called Islamic State of Afghanistan
  • Split by the Hindu Kush Mountains that rise up to 24,000 feet.
  • Harsh climate with cold winters and hot summers.
  • Afghanistan has no coastline though it has 1,200 kilometers of waterways. It has ports and harbors at Kheyrabad and Shir Khan.
  • Area: 647,500 sq km. Around the size of Texas.
  • Afghanistan can trace its history to the times of Alexander the Great, who used the country as a gateway to India.
  • Population is around 31 million (Pashtun 42%, Tajik 27%, Hazara 9%, Aimaks 4%, Turkmen 3%, Baloch 2%, others 4%).
  • Official languages are Dari Persian and Pashtu. Other languages include Turkic.
  • Islam is the majority religion with Sunni’s comprising 80% and Shiites 19%.
  • Capital city is Kabul. Other main cities are Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif, Charikar and Herat.
  • Most of the country is taken up by high, snow-capped mountains.
  • Afghanistan’s major exports include fruits and nuts, carpets, wool, cotton, skins, precious and semi-precious gems. It is also believed to be a major exporter of opium.
  • The local currency is the Afghani.
  • Agricultural products include opium, wheat, fruits, nuts, wool, mutton, sheepskins and lambskins. Among its natural resources are: natural gas, petroleum, coal, copper, chromites, talc, barites, sulfur, lead, zinc, iron ore, salt, precious and semiprecious stones.
  • Major trading partners include Pakistan, India, United States, Germany, Turkmenistan, Kenya, South Korea and Russia.
  • Afghanistan is governed by a multi-party government that replaced the Taliban, which was overthrown in 1992 by a United States-led coalition.

    Pakistan

    Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a country located in South Asia and the Greater Middle East. It has a 1046 kilometer coastline along the Arabian Sea in the south, and is bordered by Afghanistan and Iran in the west, India in the east and the People's Republic of China in the far northeast. Pakistan's estimated population as of April 2006 was 165,803,560. This places Pakistan as the sixth country with the largest population.

    Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world and is the second most populous Muslim country.[3] Its territory was a part of pre-partition British India, and has a long history of settlement and civilisation including the Indus Valley Civilisation. Most of it was conquered in the 1st millennium BCE by Persians and Greeks. Later arrivals include the Arabs, Afghans, Turks, and Mongols. The territory was incorporated into the British Raj in the nineteenth century. Since its independence, the country has experienced both periods of significant military and economic growth, and periods of instability, with the secession of East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). Pakistan is a declared nuclear weapons state.

    • Balochistan
    • North-West Frontier Province (NWFP)
    • Punjab

    Morocco

    Morocco lies across the Strait of Gibraltar on the Mediterranean from the north and the Atlantic Ocean from the northwest. It is bordered by Algeria to the east and Mauritania from the south and is famous for the Atlas Mountains, which run northeastwards from the south to near Algeria.

    • Official name is Kingdom of Morocco.
    • Morocco’s terrain is diverse. The northern coast and interior are mountainous, large areas of which border plateaus. The coastal plains near the Atlantic Ocean are rich and fertile.
    • Climate is Mediterranean becoming more extreme as you move inland.
    • Morocco’s land borders total 2,017 in length while its coastline is 1,825 kilometers.
    • Area: 446,550 sq km, of which 446,300 sq km is land and 250 sq km sis water.
    • Berbers have been natives of Morocco for centuries before the Arabs brought Islam at the end of the seventh century. Achieved independence from France in 1956.
    • Population of Morocco is almost 33.5 million, with Arab-Berbers accounting for 99.1%.
    • The official language is Arabic. Also spoken are the Berber dialects and French in business, government and diplomacy.
    • Muslims make up 99% of the population while the rest are Christians.
    • Capital is Rabat. Other large cities are Casablanca, Fez and Marrakech.
    • Major exports are clothing, fish, inorganic chemicals, transistors, crude minerals, fertilizers, petroleum products, fruits and vegetables.
    • The local currency is the dirham.
    • Agricultural products are barley, wheat, citrus, wine, vegetables, olives and livestock.
    • Major trading partners include France, Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, United States, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia and China.
    • Government is a constitutional monarchy.

      Malaysia

      Malaysia or “The Federation of Malaysia” is located in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is divided into two geographical regions, which are divided by the South China Sea. The first region is called West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia, Malay Peninsula). This region shares a land frontier on the north with Thailand and is connected by a causeway and a bridge on the south with the island state of Singapore. The other region, East Malaysia, is bordered to the south by Indonesia and borders the Sultanate of Brunei on the east, south, and west.

      • Located in Southeast Asia
      • Consists of the Malaysian Peninsula and the States of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo
      • Malaysia's coastline is 4,800 km long
      • Malaysia has over two hundred islands.

      • Official Language is Bahasa Melayu. Chinese dialects and Tamil are spoken by the respective ethnic groups. English is the official language when conducting business.
