Prophets in Islam

Posted by Nosheen Z in Prophets in Islam

Muslims believe that Allah sent prophets and messengers to every part of the world, each of them carrying the same message – worship Allah alone without partners.

As such, Muslims believe that all prophets carried the message of Islam, which is to submit oneself to the will of God.

Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon all of them) told their followers to submit to God, and therefore, they were Muslims. Descriptions such as “Judaism” or “Christianity” did not exist during the time of Moses or Jesus respectively.

There are a number of beliefs that Muslims have toward Allah’s prophets.

  • Not all of them were equal – in the Quran, Allah tells us that he preferred some of the prophets to others. “Those Messengers! We preferred some of them to others; to some of them Allah spoke (directly); others He raised to degrees (of honor)” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:253).
  • First and last – Adam was the first prophet of Allah and Muhammad was the last. In between, it is reported that there have been more than 120,000 prophets, of whom only a handful are known to us by name.
  • Muhammad’s law – as the seal of the prophets, Muhammad’s law, which replaces those of his predecessors, and as revealed to him by Allah, is the way of life that must be accepted by all mankind. The Prophet said to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab: “By Allah, if my brother Moosa (Moses) were alive, he would have no choice but to follow me.”
  • Jesus will return – Muslims believe that Jesus will one day descend to Earth over Damascus, kill the Anti-Christ and rule for a certain number of years. However, he will not return as a prophet but as a follower Islam to enforce the laws revealed to Muhammad(P.B.U.H).

Rights Of Women in Islam

Posted by Nosheen Z in Rights Of Women in Islam

Women’s liberation is a very subjective topic, especially when it comes to Western perceptions. Are women who wear flimsy clothes free, or are they slaves to a society that requires young girls to flaunt themselves to be accepted?

Islam gave rights to women 1,400 years ago. Indeed, these rights would have startled many so-called progressive western societies even a century ago as women in Islam received rights to inheritance, their names, their earnings and roles as equals in the eyes of Allah.

Less than a century before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), many historians believe that the 585 AD Council of Macon decreed that women do not have souls.

In Surah Al-Nisa (4), verse 7, Allah says with regards to inheritance: “From what is left by parents and those nearest related there is a share for men and a share for women, whether the property be small or large – an ordained share.”

Wife-beating is a major problem in western societies as well as societies that are supposedly Muslims, but Islam frowns upon such evil practices, as the Prophet said: “Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them.” (Abu Dawud: Book 11, Number 2139).

Women’s rights in Islam include:

  • Name – Islam forbids Muslim women from removing the name of their father. Therefore, after marriage, a Muslim woman is not permitted to take the name of her husband, as is the common practice these days.
  • Choice of husband – a Muslim woman has the right to refuse a marriage proposal. The Prophet made it clear that a girl’s permission is to be sought before a marriage can be validated.
  • Earnings – women have the right to earn money in a halal (permissible) manner and are under no obligation to use their earnings for their upkeep. This is the responsibility of their husbands.
  • Protection – it is a right of the women in Islam to be protected by their male relatives or husbands; to be housed, clothed and fed.

The Belief of "Hell" in Islam

Posted by Nosheen Z in Belief of "Hell" in Islam
The belief in Hell, or Jahannam, is compulsory on all Muslims. It is the fear of the Hellfire that prompts Muslims to spend their worldly days in prayer and obedience to Allah.

The Quran has many graphic descriptions of Hell as a warning to Muslims of what they will suffer should they make partners with Allah in worship or disobey the commandments of his messenger, Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

Some of aspects of the Hellfire are as follows:

  • Fuel: the fuel of the Hellfire is that of men and stones, as Allah says in the Quran, Surah al Baqarah, verse 24: “then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, …..”
  • Heat – the Hellfire is 70 times hotter than the hottest fires of Earth. In a narration from Bukhari, the Prophet said: “Fire as we know it is one seventieth part of the Fire of Hell. It is as if sixty-nine equal portions were added to the fire as we know it.”
  • Food – the food for the residents of the Hellfire will neither nourish them nor provide them with relief from hunger. In Surah Al Ghashiya, verses 6-7, Allah says: “No food will there be for them except from a poisonous, thorny plant which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.”
  • Length of stay – not everyone will be in the Hellfire forever. Those who have not worshipped other than Allah but may have sinned during his or her life may be placed in the Hellfire for a period of time and Allah, should He wish, may take them out and give them Paradise. However, those who have worshipped other than Allah (idols, prophets, saints, animals, trees etc), and believed that these objects could help them as only Allah can and died in that state, they will be in the Hellfire forever. Allah knows best.
