Prophets in Islam
Posted by Nosheen Z in Prophets in Islam
Muslims believe that Allah sent prophets and messengers to every part of the world, each of them carrying the same message – worship Allah alone without partners.
As such, Muslims believe that all prophets carried the message of Islam, which is to submit oneself to the will of God.
Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon all of them) told their followers to submit to God, and therefore, they were Muslims. Descriptions such as “Judaism” or “Christianity” did not exist during the time of Moses or Jesus respectively.
There are a number of beliefs that Muslims have toward Allah’s prophets.
- Not all of them were equal – in the Quran, Allah tells us that he preferred some of the prophets to others. “Those Messengers! We preferred some of them to others; to some of them Allah spoke (directly); others He raised to degrees (of honor)” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:253).
- First and last – Adam was the first prophet of Allah and Muhammad was the last. In between, it is reported that there have been more than 120,000 prophets, of whom only a handful are known to us by name.
- Muhammad’s law – as the seal of the prophets, Muhammad’s law, which replaces those of his predecessors, and as revealed to him by Allah, is the way of life that must be accepted by all mankind. The Prophet said to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab: “By Allah, if my brother Moosa (Moses) were alive, he would have no choice but to follow me.”
- Jesus will return – Muslims believe that Jesus will one day descend to Earth over Damascus, kill the Anti-Christ and rule for a certain number of years. However, he will not return as a prophet but as a follower Islam to enforce the laws revealed to Muhammad(P.B.U.H).
