Growing a Beard
About This Book
In Growing a Beard, Dr. Gohar Mushtaq makes the case for a Sunnah that many Muslim men today have given up. He draws on Qur'anic exegesis, hadith, the opinions of the jurists, history, social psychology, biology and comparative religion.
He looks at why many Muslims no longer see the beard as part of Muslim identity and traces that change to cultural and psychological pressures rather than simple neglect. He also covers the history of the beard across nations and eras.
Alongside the religious evidence, he presents studies in which bearded men were rated by both men and women as more attractive, more intelligent, more honest and more heroic.
Dr. Mushtaq holds a Ph.D. in Medical Biochemistry from Rutgers University and studied the classical Islamic sciences with several scholars. He is also the author of The Hijab: Liberation or Oppression? and The Music Made Me Do It.
