Characteristics of the Hypocrites
About This Book
In Characteristics of the Hypocrites, Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah describes hypocrisy as a deep-rooted disease of the heart. Because it is hidden and subtle, a person can be full of it without knowing, and can even believe he is doing good while he is spreading corruption.
He separates its two types. Major hypocrisy is showing belief while hiding disbelief, and it leads to the lowest depths of the Fire. Minor hypocrisy concerns actions rather than belief. Its signs are well known: lying when speaking, breaking promises, betraying trusts and behaving abusively in a dispute.
Minor hypocrisy is the kind most readers will recognize in themselves, and the Companions were the most worried about it. By naming its symptoms, the book gives the reader something to check his own heart against.
