Tafseer Soorah al-Hujurat: A Commentary on the 49th Chapter of the Qur'an by Dr. Bilal Philips explains a soorah that gives guidance, commands and prohibitions on everyday social relations, including gossip, spying, arguing and bigotry.
Dr. Philips follows the method of the classical tafseer works. He explains the verses first through the Qur'an itself, then through the Sunnah and the events surrounding their revelation, then through the interpretations of the Companions known for their understanding of the Qur'an, such as 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas. He also draws on the grammatical explanations found in classical commentaries, and where possible he applies the meanings of the verses to problems in present-day society.
The core of the tafseer and its introduction to the science of tafseer were first prepared for a course the author taught in Trinidad in 1981; this book is an edited and revised version of that material.
