Fiqh al-Haya: The Islamic Concept of Modesty
About This Book
Fiqh al-Haya by Shaykh Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddim is a detailed study of haya, usually translated as modesty. It is built around the statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that modesty is part of faith.
Al-Muqaddim shows that haya is much more than shyness or a dress code. He describes it as reverence for Allah joined with sincerity, self-respect, humility, chastity and moral courage: a wish to avoid whatever displeases the Creator, in every part of life. He explains its linguistic and Islamic meanings, its categories and its link to iman, using the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the understanding of the Salaf.
The book then applies haya to speech, worship, family life, business and the private conduct that only Allah sees, with examples from the prophets, the Companions and the righteous who followed them. It also looks at what wears modesty down today, such as media and social pressure, and gives practical steps like lowering the gaze and guarding the tongue.
