The book describes Shaytaan as sitting on every path of obedience and working in stages. First he tries to make a person forget a good deed so that he does not think of it or desire it. If that fails, he tries to make the person miss it. If the person still performs it, he tries to strip it of sincerity, truthfulness and eagerness, or to make the person do less of it. Failing that, he tries to make the person do it without care, consistency or perseverance. Knowing these stages helps the reader recognize them and guard against them.
