About This Book
This is a biography of Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, the Damascus scholar known for his learning, his memory, and his large body of writing. He wrote more than a hundred books across many Islamic sciences, and his works are still studied today. He is widely known as a leading student of Ibn Taymiyyah.
The book opens with his full name and lineage: Abu 'Abdillah Shams ad-Din Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ayyub az-Zur'i ad-Dimashqi al-Hanbali. It records that he was born in 691 AH, and explains where his well-known name comes from: his father served for many years as the qayyim, or director, of al-Madrasah al-Jawziyyah in Damascus, and the title passed to his son and descendants.
