About This Book
The Caliphate of Banu Umayyah is taken from the abridged English translation of Ibn Kathir's Al-Bidayah wan Nihayah (The Beginning and The End), and covers the Umayyad period of Islamic history. It begins in 41 AH with the rule of Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan and ends in 132 AH with the rule of the last Umayyad caliph, Marwan al-Himar. The Umayyads ruled from Damascus, and their state was one of the largest in history.
Following Ibn Kathir's method, the book moves year by year. Each year records the main political and military events, followed by notices of prominent people who died in that year, so it serves both as a narrative history and as a reference.
