About Imam Nawawi
His name was "Abu Zakaria Mohiuddin Yahya Ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (Arabic: أبو
زكريا يحيى بن شرف النووي)" but popularly known as al-Nawawi, an-Nawawi or Imam
Nawawi. He lived in the era (1234–1278) corresponding to 631 – 676 A.H. He was a
Sunni Muslim author on Fiqh and hadith. His position on legal matters is
considered the authoritative one in the Shafi'i Madhhab. He was born at Nawa
near Damascus, Syria. As with many Arabic and Semitic names, the last part of
his name refers to his hometown.
During his short life of only 45 years he wrote many books on Islamic studies
and other topics. One of his famous works involved collecting and sourcing the
40 hadith of the Prophet Mohammed back to one of his companions. This book is a
commentary on those 40 ahadith.
