Research Summary

q       From the September 11 event to Iraq war, several events have affected the Muslim world and attitudes towards the U.S. However, the dynamics of these events have deep roots in history.

q       If these trends should continue, it would make security management in the Muslim countries a difficult issue demanding U.S. political and military resources.

q       The crucial point in history demands a strategy toward the Muslim world to ease the causes of religious and political extremism and anti-U.S. attitudes, which becomes the chief concern of this report.

q       The report prescribes strategies to promote democracy in different regions of the Muslim world by exploring the unique conditions in each of these regions with appropriate solution.

q       Going back to the history, the report traces the roots of terrorist tendencies and suggests case-specific solutions with respect to each region.

q       The background is prepared for the study by identifying seven major marker issues and areas based on typical ideological orientations.

q       The topics eventually develop on identifying the cleavages and fault lines in each of these regions leading to crisis situations.

q       Further, the report examines the factors responsible for extremism, violence, and Islamic radicalism and the operation of these factors and their broader effects resulting in regional and international violence.

q       Finally, the report devises strategies, political and military options for the United States to effectively combat the challenges and make effective use of the contemporary changes in the Muslim world.

q       Broadly speaking, the report is a welcome initiative in paving a way to effectively fight the challenges posed by the terrorist tendencies threatening the international community.
