Jesus in Islam

Jesus, or Esa as he is known to Muslims, is one of Allah’s greatest prophets who brought the same message as all of God’s messengers – worship the One true God without partners.

It is obligatory on Muslims to love Jesus and to honor him, as they do for all of Allah’s messengers.

Muslims, however, do not believe that Jesus is the son of God nor God himself. According to Islam, Jesus was simply a man who was born of a miraculous birth to Mary without male intervention.

Other aspects of Jesus that Muslims must believe in include:

  • Christ – he is the Christ or Messiah, sent to the children of Israel, confirming what Moses brought before him and commanding them to worship Allah alone.

  • Denial – In the Quran, Allah has said how Jesus will deny telling his followers to worship him as a partner with Allah. In Surah Ma’idah, verse 116 to 117, the Quran says: “And behold! God will say: 'Oh Jesus, the son of Mary! Did you say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods along with Allah?' He will say: 'Glory to Thee! Never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would indeed have known it. You know what is in my heart, though I know not what is in Yours. For You know in full all that is hidden. Never did I say to them anything except what You commanded me to say: ‘Worship God, my Lord and your Lord.’ And I was a witness over them while I lived among them. When You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are a witness to all things’.”

  • Return – the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said Jesus would return near the end of time and establish Islam on the Earth. According to Saheeh Muslim, the prophet said: “Allah will send the Messiah, son of Mary, who will descend at the white minaret on the eastern side of Damascus wearing two garments, lightly dyed with saffron, his hands resting on the wings of two Angels.”

  • Not crucified – Muslims do not believe that Jesus was crucified. Rather, it was made to look that way to protect him and Allah raised him up to the Heavens, where he is now.
