The US immigration polices have seen a
dramatic change over the past 6 years. The presence of approximately
10 million illegal residents, diversity program that brings more
than 50,000 new legal residents to the United States each year,
worker visas and similar other immigration programs has stirred
enormous hue and cry in various quarters within the US American
community. It would be fair to say that most of these policies have
seen a change due to concerns of homeland security. It is very
common to hear ongoing intense debate over various channels
including talk radio and TV shows to curb immigration to the USA.
To
further tighten controls on the
entry of illegal and suspicious
individuals through the US borders,
the department of homeland security
has also established a presence in
various Middle Eastern countries to
tightly scrutinize applications of
applicants. Some of the countries
where department of homeland
security has established presence
include Pakistan, Egypt,
Saudi-Arabia and United Emirates.
It is
important however that legal
immigrants and naturalized citizens
are aware of their rights while
living in the US, as the US
constitution protects such legal
residents from discrimination based
on race and national origin.
Immigrants should always remember
that besides the protection afforded
by the constitution, such residents
also pay their share of taxes while
living in the USA and are subject to
all US laws.
One
organization that investigates and
works for immigrants’ rights in USA
is the American Civil Liberties
Union (ACLU). ACLU is one of
America’s leading advocates for the
rights of immigrants, refugees and
non-citizens. The organization has a
history of challenging
unconstitutional laws and practices,
and is known to counter the myths
upon which many of these laws are
based. ACLU has fought for the
rights of Muslim immigrants as well
over the past years where many of
them have been imprisoned without
charges.
