Abaya and hijab are designed exactly to protect the virtue of the Muslim woman. However, there are some provisions that will enable men to know his intended wife more deeply before marriage. According to the Prophet, When any one of you proposes marriage to a woman, there is no sin if he looks at her, rather he should look at her for the purpose of proposing marriage even if she is unaware as narrated by Ahmad.
