Riyad Al Saleheen - Introduction

Riyad al Saleheen, a famous Islamic book compiled by Imam An Nawawi, contains verses of the Holy Quran and Hadith in 265 chapters. Several renowned Islamic Scholars agree on the authenticity of hadith compiled in this book. The commentaries on hadith have been written by Muhammad ibn al Uthaymeen. The title Riyad al Saleheen means "The Gardens of the Righteous". The meaning of the title name is self-explanatory because the reader knows to gain extensive knowledge about how to live life according to Allah's teachings that we find in the Holy Quran and lives of Allah's messengers. All material except the commentary on hadith has been taken directly from the Holy Quran and Hadith of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).

About the author - Imam An Nawawi

The author of this publication, Imam An Nawawi's full name is Yahya ibn Sharaf ibn Murree' ibn Hasan ibn Hussein ibn Muhammad ibn Jumu'ah ibn Hizzaam. He is known as Imam An Nawawi because of his place of birth (the village of Nawa, Damascus Syria). He was born in the year 631 H (1233 AD) and during the ten medial days of Muharram. Imam An Nawawi is known as one of the most knowledgeable scholar of Islam and has contributed whole his life towards Islam. He has written several Islamic books which are well-known to contain extensive knowledge about different religious matters.

He memorized the Holy Quran at an early age and then his father took him to Damascus so that he can attain knowledge from a well-known madrasa of that time, Al Madrasah Al-Rawaaheeyah. He was blessed with an excellent memory and was able to memorize several famous books such as 'al-Tanbeeh fee Furoo' alShaaji 'eeyah and 'al-Muhadhab fee al-Furoo. He was also blessed with very quick learning ability and this quality secured his acquisition of a sea of knowledge in a life span of only 44 years.

Imam An Nawawi followed very famous scholars in the Branches of Fiqh and Usool, the field of Hadeeth and Grammar and language, the results are obvious in his publications as these are being studied in the Muslim community and well regarded as an authentic source of knowledge in their respective topics. Imam An Nawawi attained great respect amongst scholars and he is being known as 'Imaam of Asceticism', the 'Model of Piety,' the 'Exemplar in the Commandment of Good and the Avoidance of Evil,' and the 'Counselor to the Rulers.

During his life, Imam An Nawawi had established some principles which he followed. Some notable principles of his life were that he was dedicated to teach his knowledge to other while being at the institute, Dar al Hadeeth, and he gave his salary to charity instead of using it for himself. He also never accepted gifts from anyone unless he needed that item. The life he lived is full of such examples which show that he was dedicated to sacrifice his life for the religion.

Shaykh al Uthaymeen (Author of the commentary on the book)

Shaykh al Uthaymeen is known as Abu 'Abdullah, Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Muhammad ibn 'Uthaymeen al-Muqbil al-Wuhaybee al-Tameemee. He was born on the 27th of Ramadan 1347 H in the city of Unayzah, Qaseem. From an early age, he started to read the Holy Quran under the supervision of his grandfather, Shaykh 'AbdurRahman ibn Sulaymaan Aala Daarnigh. He then memorized the Holy Quran and later on he became a scholar with great command of religious knowledge.

Shaykh al Uthaymeen was nominated for the Imamate of the Mosque, al-Jaami 'a al-Kabeer after the former Imam, Shaykh 'AbdurRahman al-Sa'dee passed away in the year 1376 H. He was also awarded an opportunity to hold a position in the judiciary by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraheem Ala Shaykh, Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He has a long list of students who study under his supervision. Shaykh al Uthaymeen died at the age of 75 in January 2001 at the same place where he was born (Unaizah Saudi Arabia.)
